Her 1st husband was an arranged marriage as a teenager (Francis II of France). Darnley was murdered, and yes, it's widely believed that James Hepburn, Lord Bothwell, the Queen's third and final husband, was involved in the deed (but new research indicates that he probably did not act alone, and one line of speculation is that he may have been set up to the be the fall guy for the other conspirators.)James Smithnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049832311913108906.post-37513774146409891482013-02-27T17:37:48.331-06:002013-02-27T17:37:48.331-06:00Which husband is this? i seem to remember she had ...Which husband is this? i seem to remember she had several, who went around murdering each other. . .

Looking forward to the snake piece, and, in the fullness of time, the novel. There's one...Can´t wait to read 'em :>

There's one Holmes story that involves wild animals; it was one of my favorites.

As for the jaguar, yeah, I suposse James may be right, as even today people living in jaguar country will consider the black jaguar as a separate species, or even claim that there are different spotted jaguar species as well, based on the slightest differences such as the lenght of limbs or the size of spots. Then, too, fact that big cats other than lions and tigers tend to have a broad variety of local names could give an English armchair naturalist the impression that the New World was inhabited by a veritable circus of weird and exotic predators. (This one was always a favorite of mine--I discovered it in high school and it turned me on to Doyle as a master of the horror short.)
James Smithnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8049832311913108906.post-37103680580750626372013-02-23T18:32:34.381-06:002013-02-23T18:32:34.381-06:00My guess is Doyle and his editors weren't sure...My guess is Doyle and his editors weren't sure readers would be familiar with that word.
