Pet Hippo Kills Owner

South African farmer killed by pet hippopotamus - Telegraph:

"Marius Els, 41, was attacked by Humphrey on Saturday night. The farmer’s mutilated body was discovered submerged in a river running through his 400 acres in rural South Africa.

Earlier this year Mr Els was pictured happily riding on his pet bull hippo’s back.

'Humphrey’s like a son to me, he’s just like a human,' he said at the time.

'There’s a relationship between me and Humphrey and that’s what some people don’t understand.'"

  1. Im sure you watched that Animal Planet show called Fatal Attractions or something like that? It dealt precisely with this kind of situation; delusional owner says there's a special bond with the wild animal, then gets dismembered or something like that. It was a really disturbing show, not because of the maulings but because of the obvious mental issues of the people involved...

  2. I haven't seen that show (don't seem to find much time for TV lately), but it sounds like something I'd find interesting. I've also heard lately about a couple of documentary films that tackle this subject. I'll show some trailers tomorrow.

  3. Ever heard bout Werner Herzog's "Grizzly Man" and the dude depicted in it - Timothy Treadwell?

  4. Yes--that's a very interesting film too, and with Treadwell's beautiful film of the bears. I guess the Treadwell case was less tragic in a one sense: he and his lady friend chose to live among the grizzlies. People who keep exotic pets outside their normal environs endanger their neighbors as well. Of course Treadwell's actions put the bears at risk. And the officers who had to recover his remains and see to the killer bear.
