Crazy Ants Invade US

Interesting item: Crazy ants have moved north to colonize parts of the US. They've wiped out the imported fire ants in some regions. Animal invasions are nothing new, but we may see more of them as the globe warms and more northerly regions take on tropical or semi-tropical temperatures.

Hairy, crazy ants invade from Texas to Miss. - Yahoo! News:

"A camper's metal walls bulge from the pressure of ants nesting behind them. A circle of poison stops them for only a day, and then a fresh horde shows up, bringing babies. Stand in the yard, and in seconds ants cover your shoes.
It's an extreme example of what can happen when the ants — which also can disable huge industrial plants — go unchecked. "

  1. They're not crazy, they're just ahead of the curve XD

  2. One obscure item I forgot to mention: the gigantic robber crab, mentioned in The Book of Deadly Animals as not so dangerous after all, is being wiped out by crazy ants. They invade its shell and eat iit alive.

  3. :o That's awful news... is it happening in the entire robber crab range or just in a part of it?

  4. I don't have my reference handy here, but my memory is that the robber (Birgos latro) is now endangered because of this.

  5. A quick look on Wikipedia--no mention there of the crazy ant, but it does mention the crabs being protected only in some areas and that they've been extirpated by humans in some places. Here's an interesting tidbit: "Coconut crabs may be responsible for the disappearance of Amelia Earhart's remains, consuming them after her death and hoarding her bones in their burrows." That's a new one on me.

  6. I kinda like that version of her story's end... it adds to the legend, you know.
