A Quiet Rattlesnake

Reader Bob Haynie photographed this rattlesnake near his home in Washington state. It was near some water Bob leaves out for birds. The snake was not aggressive and didn't even rattle as it retreated from Bob's presence--though its posture here does seem defensive.

  1. Ever heard of the rattle-less rattlesnake? Its a species, not a mutation:

    1. Howdy. These guys have rattles, although they sound more like a grasshopper beating its wings than the maracas you hear in the movies. I have been walking with friends who heard them when I did not; I have a bad ear. Makes me pay attention when I am walking around. -- Bob Haynie

    1. Dee. My camera has a great zoom. I was not anywhere near so close as this makes it look. Probably three feet. Close enough for me; these snakes are not aggressive, but that's no reason to be stupid.
